Gap Inc has launched a company-wide transformation programme that puts artificial intelligence at the centre of its shared marketing organisation. The initiative covers the retailer’s full portfolio, spanning the namesake Gap brand alongside Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta, and marks one of the most detailed AI marketing roadmaps announced by a major fashion retailer this year.
The effort rests on three strategic partnerships. Google Cloud will help the company build a unified data foundation, Zeta Global will engineer an AI-powered marketing stack, and Publicis Sapient will work on connecting marketing activity more closely to consumer behaviour. Rather than starting with paid media, the rollout begins with Gap Inc’s owned marketing channels, where AI will personalise experiences at scale, improve customer interactions and accelerate campaign delivery.
Why the Google Cloud Partnership Matters
The Google Cloud relationship is not new. It began in 2025, and the retailer will now use it to unite customer and product intelligence for personalisation, decision-making and continuous learning across content, activations and ecommerce. The stack goes deep into Google’s AI ecosystem. Gap plans to use Agent Studio, Agent Engine and Gemini models for AI workflows, while Nano Banana and Veo will generate image and video content at scale.
Zeta Global’s contribution centres on its intelligence layer. Athena by Zeta connects data, decisions and execution, with agentic capabilities that bring together strategy, creative development, campaign activation and optimisation. Publicis Sapient rounds out the trio, supporting transformation across talent, process, technology, data and partner ecosystems.
Positioning AI as a Creative Enabler, Not a Replacement
Gap’s leadership is framing the shift carefully. Damon Berger, senior vice president for marketing shared services, said the transformation combines team creativity with AI, removing silos and building a marketing model that learns and improves with every customer interaction. He stressed that the goal is freeing teams for strategy, storytelling and work that builds lasting brand love.
That framing lands in an industry wary of AI encroaching on jobs and responsibilities, and it matters more for Gap than most. The retailer has built genuine cultural momentum through creative-led campaigns, and the business results back it up. Gap Inc posted its ninth consecutive quarter of positive comparable sales in Q1 2026, with the flagship brand offsetting smaller gains at Old Navy and Banana Republic and an 11 per cent decline at Athleta.
CEO Richard Dickson has named technology as a core investment priority, describing the company as brand-led and intelligence powered.
The Takeaway for Marketers
The announcement arrives amid a flood of AI partnership news dominating the marketing world around Cannes Lions. What sets Gap apart is specificity: named tools, named partners, and a clear starting point in owned channels where first-party data delivers the fastest returns. For brands watching from the sidelines, the message is that AI transformation now starts with email, apps, ecommerce and CRM, not with ads.
